By the end of
May this year, Two Rivers Main Street in partnership with
the City, Two Rivers Utilities and Lakefield Telephone will
begin broadcasting Wi- Fi, which is a wireless radio signal
that enables anyone with a laptop computer or a variety of
handheld devices to access the internet. This service will
extend from the Lighthouse Inn to 22nd Street along
Washington Street. Best of all, this Wi-Fi service is
provided to all free of charge. That’s right, FREE Wi-Fi.
We’re calling this service Cool City Hot Spots.
How can we offer this service for free? We can offer free
Wi-Fi by selling advertising on the “splash page.” In order
for anyone to log on and take advantage of free wireless
internet, they will have to click on a disclaimer and that
is located on a page called a splash page. The splash page
pops up when a person opens their laptop and first attempts
to log onto the free internet service. On that splash page
are 12 advertisements and each ad is dynamic, in other
words, it can be linked to your own website. Each
advertiser will be able to upload their ads and change them
at any time. The advertiser will have total control of
their ad.
How will this service help your business? Free Wi-Fi can
help you in a couple of different ways. First there is the
advertising which should direct additonal traffic to your e
commerce or website and even if you don’t advertise on the
splash page, your business will be able to offer the free
internet access as a value-added offering to your
customers. Remember, as a business along Washington Street
(where the Wi-Fi signal will be strongest) you can inform
customers of the availability of wireless internet which is
fine if they have a laptop or handheld device with them, or
you can provide them with a computer to use while they
wait. The crucial advantage to a public
Wi-Fi system like Cool City Hot Spots is that it enables
people to get onto the web without them using YOUR internet
line. Therefore, it keeps people from doing anything that
may jeopardize your business internet or tie up your
bandwidth. So spread the word, Two Rivers has a “hot spot
downtown” and not many Wisconsin cities can say
that!
